Sustainable and productive sourcing operations that conserve biodiversity
Since 2020, our Organization has been committed to its goal for 2030 that consists in ensuring that 100% of the commodities used in its operations are sourced in a productive and sustainable way, thus successfully conserving biodiversity. In this regard, as of 2023, we have achieved a 63.3% progress for the main sixteen commodities used by our Company. For this purpose, we have worked on developing capabilities, supporting initiatives and programs centered on reducing and decelerating the loss of nature and biodiversity by promoting the efficient use of our natural resources, and conserving ecosystems that are critically important for humanity.
Relevant initiatives:
Restoring paramo regions in Colombia:
The “Recuperemos Nuestros Páramos” (Let’s restore our paramo regions) Project was concluded in 2023 in collaboration with the ‘Masbosques’ Corporation and four other Colombian environmental corporations. This project, which was started in 2020, engaged 401 families distributed according to the jurisdiction of each environmental corporation: Cornare (140), Corpocesar (50), Corponor (90) and Corpourabá (121). A total of 150 tree species native to the high Andean forest and tropical dry forest ecosystems were planted. This action contributes to the conservation of the paramo regions, the preservation of hydrographic basins and the active participation of the communities residing in the Colombian paramo regions.
‘Gualí’ wetland:
Since 2022, the Pastas Business has been implementing a process centered on the conservation and restoration of the wetland, which is located in three municipalities of the Colombian department of Cundinamarca: Tenjo, Mosquera and Funza. This is a strategic ecosystem that is part of the Bogotá river basin, and it is the home of more than 96 fauna species and 42 flora species. After more than ten field visits to Gualí and other wetlands, we were able to reach a thorough understanding of the functionality and importance of this ecosystem and proceeded to conduct a diagnosis to identify the threatened and endangered species. Moreover, we performed a strategic mapping process to identify partners in collaboration with the National Business Association of Colombia and Universidad EAN. The result of this exercise consisted in the identification of 37 strategic actors, including institutions, environmental corporations, mayors’ offices, universities and other industries. As output of this stage, our Company will publish and deliver a public citizenship science guide to put it at the service of the population as an engagement tool for the actors who were mapped out, and it will include the activities to be carried out.
Agroforestry systems centered on the protection of the Andean bear:
Fundación Nutresa and WCS continued making progress in the project focused on
protecting the Andean bear with the purpose of building the potential of the
agroforestry systems in the coffee plantations of the municipalities of El Águila and El
Tambo in the Colombian states of Valle del Cauca and Cauca, respectively. Throughout 2023, seventy-four camera traps were installed, enabling the sampling of the activity in 3,554 nights. As a result, nineteen mammal species (among other) were identified, including Andean bears, pumas, crab-eating foxes, western mountain coatis and South American coatis, southern tamanduas, little red brockets, white-tailed deer and three oncilla or tigrillo individuals, which is an uncommon and exotic species. In addition to monitoring biodiversity, WCS provided assistance that enabled the follow-up of the plans related to fertilization, integrated pest control and implementation of leading practices for managing honey water. At the initiative of the producers who protect the Andean bear, a coffee seedbed was built to stabilize and standardize the production based on its 13,000- seedling capacity. This project saw a 49% increase in dry parchment coffee productivity in 2023.
Regeneration Networks
The Partnership of the Colombian Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), Grupo Bancolombia’s Foundation and Fundación Nutresa enabled the implementation of the Regeneration Network Project in 2023. The objective of the project consists in strengthening regeneration networks in prioritized Colombian territories, Antioquia, Valle del Cauca and Quindío, where the regeneration of soils, ecosystems and multiple natural resources was the overarching activity. Thanks to these efforts, more than forty regeneration networks were reinforced through multiple strategies, ten of them received funding to implement strengthening actions for on-going processes and bonds were built to keep on constructing inclusion-driven food systems where the communities, nature and the Company share a common place.
